Man Dies in an Underground Petrol Tank At Port Harcourt Filling Station

A man identified as Mr. Francis Damgbor, who hails from Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, has allegedly died in a confined underground fuel tank in a filling station around Rumukwurushi area of Port Harcourt.
The man allegedly died as a result f asphyxia and gas emission in the early hours of Thursday while attempting to rescue someone who was cleaning and renovating the underground petrol tank in station.
According to a family source of the deceased, the management of the fuel station hired a labourer to clean the tank, and while cleaning the tank, he screamed for help, and Mr. Damgbor rushed to save him and died in the process, while the person survived.
It was gathered that the body has since been deposited at a mortuary in Port-Harcourt, and the petrol station closed for business.
Meanwhile, petrochemical engineer Engr. Everest Njoku described what might have caused the tragedy. “The person may have died from a lack of oxygen because it is a confined space and not everyone is trained to enter a confined area,” he said.
He recommends contractors to use the proper equipment and to take other safety precautions when performing underground cleaning and other activities.
Meanwhile the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police (SP), who confirmed the incident said investigation was ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of the victim.
