Yenagoa, Nigeria — A self-styled former militant leader in the Niger Delta, General Amagbein, has expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing one of the President’s recent appointments as both “necessary” and “timely” in addressing Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
Amagbein, who referred to himself as a “born again militant,” commended Tinubu for what he called a bold step toward stabilizing troubled regions of the country. Speaking to journalists in Yenagoa on Sunday, the ex-agitator said the appointment would “arrest the growing trend of insecurity in some parts of the country” and restore confidence among Nigerians who have been affected by violence and criminality.
> “The President’s decision shows that he is listening to the people and acting in the national interest. This move is necessary and long overdue,” Amagbein stated. “We have seen what insecurity has done to our communities, and it is time for everyone — government, traditional rulers, and the youth — to support the new direction.”
Amagbein, who once led a militant faction in the oil-rich Niger Delta before embracing peace and rehabilitation, urged other ex-agitators to rally behind the Tinubu administration. He noted that sustained collaboration between the government and local communities would be key to achieving lasting peace in the region.
The former militant also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vital oil installations, saying that peace in the Niger Delta was essential for Nigeria’s economic stability.
> “If we maintain peace, investors will return and development will follow,” he added.
President Tinubu has in recent months made several strategic appointments aimed at strengthening national security and revitalizing the economy, moves that have drawn mixed reactions from across the country.
