Nigerian Cleric, Fada Angelo Chidi Unegbu, Backs Trump’s Intervention, Accuses Tinubu of Enabling Insecurity

By Passman Akpos

A Catholic cleric, Fada Angelo Chidi Unegbu, has expressed strong support for U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s recent comments on Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, accusing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and key Nigerian institutions of complicity in the ongoing violence across the country.

In a statement posted on social media and tagged #returntofactorysettings, Unegbu lamented what he described as “daily slaughter of innocent Nigerians,” alleging that the Tinubu administration has ignored repeated appeals to end killings and injustice.

> “We have been appealing to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu all this while to stop the killings. We have been reminding him that he has all it takes to stop insecurity and injustice in Nigeria, but he paid deaf ears to our pleas as humans are slaughtered daily like cows,” the cleric said.

Unegbu thanked President Trump for what he called “coming to our rescue,” in apparent reference to Trump’s recent vow to take action against terrorist groups in Nigeria, allegedly to protect persecuted Christians.

He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC), the presidency, and the nation’s security architecture — including the Nigerian Army, Police, and Department of State Services (DSS) — of working “hand in hand with terrorists.”

> “They are their enablers and backbone. Without their support, terrorism cannot be sustained in the Nigerian space. We are not saying it; their actions and inactions are saying and confirming it,” he wrote.

The cleric further decried the selective application of justice in the country, noting that “terrorists are walking freely” while “harmless agitators and protesters have either been killed by the same government or are in jail.”

He called for a return of what he described as the “people’s mandate” allegedly stolen during the 2023 presidential election, insisting that Nigeria’s survival depends on political justice and structural reform.

> “Nigeria cannot be rescued unless President Tinubu returns the people’s mandate he stole. The mandate should be given to the actual winner of the 2023 presidential election, or a fresh election should be conducted,” Unegbu said.

He also proposed that Nigeria either be peacefully balkanized or adopt regional autonomy as a lasting solution to its deep-seated political and ethnic divisions.

> “We just want to live. Nothing more. Thanks, President Trump, for adding your voice because the people of Nigeria have no voice before their own leaders,” he added.

Unegbu’s statement has since sparked widespread debate online, coming amid tense diplomatic discussions following Trump’s controversial remarks about possible U.S. military action against terrorist enclaves in Nigeria.
