The strike by workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has been suspended following the intervention of the federal government.
The industrial action, which disrupted flight operations nationwide on Thursday, was sparked by concerns over poor working conditions.
However, after a meeting with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in Abuja, the unions agreed to call off the strike.
On Wednesday, employees of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) embarked on a nationwide indefinite strike, citing unresolved welfare-related grievances.
Some of the key concerns include “NiMet’s refusal to negotiate or implement agreed financial allowances and unresolved entitlements,” alongside issues related to wage awards, peculiar allowances, and outstanding payments linked to the 2019 minimum wage.
The workers also accused the agency’s management of withholding critical documents, disregarding repeated requests to include omitted staff in previous payments, and prioritizing executive retreats over essential staff member training programmes.
As a result of the strike, Air Peace announced the suspension of all its flight operations across the country.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the airline cited the unavailability of QNH reports—crucial weather data necessary for safe landings—as one of the reasons for halting its services.
