NJC recommends 36 lawyers for appointment as judges, khadis

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended 36 lawyers in the country for appointment as judges and khadis in some state high and customary courts.

The recommendations were part of the resolutions reached at the Council’s 107th meeting, presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, in Abuja.

A breakdown of the recommendations shows Oyo State having the largest number, with eight candidates nominated for its high court as judges.

They are Opayinka Adeniyi Gabriel, Oyediran Oloyede Semiu, Oladejo Olusoji Moses, Ademola-Salami Oluwaseun Toluwanimi, Adesina Jimoh Adam Adekunle, Yemi Saubana Adepoju, Olutola Jolade Adenike Muraina, and Olayemi Rasaq.

This is followed by Sokoto State, with seven candidates recommended as judges for the state high court.

They are Haruna Dogondaji Mariya, Sahabi Jaredi Hadiza Ahmad, Sha’aibu Hassan, Fatima Mohammed, Sa’idu Fatima Muhammad, Nura Bello Moyi, and Abubakar.

Akwa Ibom high court has six nominations, and they are Ekanem James Bassey, Umohandi Mfon Winifred Essien, Bassey Iwakaowo Morrison, Henry Comfort Ntekim, Edet Ekpo Eddie, and Julius Sharon.

On its part, Kebbi has four candidates comprising of Muhammad Kwaido Hassan, Ibrahim Umar Halima Jagwadeji, Suru Lauratu Muhammad, and Nuruddeen.

The Sharia Court of Appeal in Sokoto has seven nominees, and they are Muhammad Abdulazeez Yar’Abba Lawal, Isa Abubakar Bello, Sokoto Ibrahim Imam, Abubakar Bello Muhammad, Abibu Lawal Ibrahim, Bodinga Umar Kabiru, and Marnona Umar.

Similarly, the Kebbi State Sharia Court of Appeal has two nominees, Aliyu Kabir, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and Bello Muhammad Atiku.

The Customary Court of Appeal in Oyo State has two nominees comprising of Oyediran Safiya Amope and Ojekunle Ojeyemi Ademola.

A statement by the NJC Deputy Director of Information, Mrs. Kemi Babalola-Ogedengbe, indicated that all recommended candidates are expected to be sworn in by their respective state governors after ratification by the appropriate bodies.
