Port Harcourt — Nigerian Afrofusion superstar Burna Boy has taken a bold step toward transforming his ancestral home, Ogbogolo in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, following a dramatic and eye-opening visit that exposed the harsh realities facing the oil-bearing community.
The Grammy-winning artist recently visited the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) headquarters, seeking strategic collaboration to drive development projects in his hometown. Accompanied by his father, Chief Samuel Ogulu, Burna Boy met with top NDDC officials, including Managing Director/CEO Chief Samuel Ogbuku, Executive Director (Finance and Administration) Alabo Boma Iyaye, and Executive Director (Corporate Services) Hon. During the meeting, Burna Boy emphasized his commitment to investing in his roots but stressed that meaningful and sustainable development would require institutional backing. In response, the NDDC leadership pledged support for initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and living conditions in Ogbogolo.
However, the urgency of this intervention was underscored by a troubling incident that unfolded during a recent visit to the community.
Popular activist VeryDarkMan had earlier visited Ogbogolo at Burna Boy’s request to assess the needs of the area. What he encountered painted a grim picture—no motorable roads, only a narrow bush path serving as the community’s lifeline.
According to sources, VeryDarkMan reported back that before any meaningful project—such as schools or hospitals—could begin, access roads must first be constructed to enable movement of materials and personnel.
Determined to see the situation firsthand, Burna Boy made the journey himself. But what was meant to be a routine inspection quickly turned dramatic when heavy rainfall turned the already poor access route into a muddy trap. One of the singer’s vehicles reportedly got stuck in the thick mud, forcing him, his team, and security personnel into a strenuous effort to pull it free.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as both shocking and symbolic—a global music icon stranded in his own community due to lack of basic infrastructure.
The incident has sparked renewed outrage, especially given Ogbogolo’s historical significance as one of the earliest oil-producing communities in Nigeria. Despite its resource wealth, residents continue to grapple with underdevelopment, poverty, and neglect.
Observers say Burna Boy’s intervention could mark a turning point. With the NDDC now on notice and public attention drawn to the plight of the community, expectations are rising for swift and tangible action.
