Oil Well Controversy! Madugba Names Oyedepo, Adeboye And Kumuyi, Alleges Obasanjo Gave Them Oil Wells

By Passman Akpos

A fresh controversy has erupted following allegations by prominent Nigerian apostolic leader and founder of the Ministers Prayer Network (MPN), Rev. Prof. Mosy Madugba, that former President Olusegun Obasanjo allocated oil wells to some of Nigeria’s most influential Christian leaders.

Madugba specifically mentioned the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye; the founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo; and the General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi.

The cleric made the allegations in a video circulating widely on social media, claiming that the alleged oil well allocations contributed to the enormous financial resources and institutional investments associated with the prominent religious leaders.

According to him, the alleged beneficiaries have established universities, hospitals and other educational institutions, while some also operate private aircraft.

Madugba further alleged that Obasanjo, during his administration, extended similar oil well allocations to some of his associates and kinsmen in the Niger Delta, thereby enabling them to accumulate enormous wealth from the country’s petroleum resources.

Speaking during a message to his congregation, the cleric urged his listeners to associate with knowledgeable and influential individuals, stressing the importance of building personal capacity and developing leadership skills.

He said:

“Associate with the wise. Choose a wise company. To be a leader, I pray that God will open your eyes to show you what things to do to increase your capacity as a human being.

“I don’t know whether you know that the big names you have in Lagos have oil wells. Obasanjo gave them oil wells. The head of Winners Chapel has an oil well.

“Adeboye has an oil well, and one other person, Kumuyi, has an oil well. They have universities. They have big hospitals. They have schools. And except Kumuyi, they have private jets.”

His comments have raised questions about the alleged relationship between political power, petroleum resources and the financial fortunes of influential individuals and institutions in Nigeria.

Of particular interest is the question of how Nigeria’s strategic petroleum assets were allocated during the Obasanjo administration, which lasted from 1999 to 2007, and whether the alleged beneficiaries can be identified through official petroleum licensing records.

However, the allegations against the three religious leaders have not been independently substantiated by documentary evidence contained in the circulating video. No official allocation documents were presented in the footage.

The claims therefore remain allegations, and the named religious leaders and former President Obasanjo have not been shown in the available reports to have responded to them.

The development also brings renewed attention to longstanding public concerns about transparency, accountability and the distribution of Nigeria’s petroleum wealth, particularly given that crude oil is predominantly produced in the Niger Delta.

For a region that has continued to grapple with environmental degradation, poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment despite decades of petroleum production, questions surrounding the allocation and ownership of oil assets remain particularly sensitive.
