Makurdi, Benue State — Tension has gripped parts of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, following the demolition of a section of President Bola Tinubu’s campaign office on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred early in the morning when a team of officials, reportedly from the Makurdi Local Government Council, arrived at the premises with bulldozers and began pulling down parts of the building.
The demolished structure, located along a major street in the city, was said to have served as the campaign coordination office for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.
While details remain sketchy, sources claim the action may have been ordered over alleged violations of town planning regulations. However, supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have condemned the move, describing it as “politically motivated.”
An APC chieftain in Benue, who spoke to journalists under anonymity, expressed outrage, saying the demolition was “an affront to the presidency and a deliberate act of provocation.”
As of press time, the Benue State Urban Development Board and the Makurdi Local Government Council were yet to issue an official statement clarifying the reasons behind the action.
Security operatives have been deployed to the area to prevent possible breakdown of law and order as angry supporters gathered to assess the damage.
More details are expected to emerge as investigations continue.
