PDP NEC Members Outline Expectations Ahead of National Convention in Ibadan

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepares for its forthcoming national convention scheduled to hold in November in Ibadan, Oyo State, members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) have begun to outline their expectations for the next national chairman.
The convention, which is expected to draw delegates from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, will mark a pivotal moment for the opposition party as it seeks to reposition itself ahead of future national elections.
According to party insiders, discussions within the NEC have centered on the need for a chairman who can unify the party’s diverse interests, strengthen internal democracy, and rebuild public confidence in the PDP’s vision and leadership.
A senior NEC member who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “What the PDP needs now is a chairman with a strong sense of discipline and inclusiveness—someone who can bring together all factions and refocus the party on its founding principles of justice, equity, and good governance.”
Others within the committee emphasized the importance of transparency in the upcoming leadership selection process, warning against the influence of money politics and external pressures that could undermine the credibility of the exercise.
Party sources also revealed that consultations are ongoing among governors, former ministers, and key stakeholders to ensure that the convention produces a consensus candidate capable of uniting the party and effectively challenging the ruling party in future elections.
With the Ibadan convention just weeks away, the PDP faces both opportunity and challenge: to prove its readiness to lead again and to demonstrate that lessons have been learned from past internal crises.
