PDP Sinks Deeper into Crisis as Wike’s Camp Announces Suspension of Acting National Chairman, Damagum

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has plunged deeper into turmoil as a fresh wave of internal divisions hit the party’s leadership.
A faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday announced the suspension of the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum, along with five other members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
According to reports, the pro-Wike group accused Damagum of bias, mismanagement of party affairs, and failure to uphold internal democracy within the PDP. The faction said its decision was aimed at rescuing the party from what it described as “a leadership hijack by vested interests.”
The move has further deepened tensions within the opposition party, already struggling to recover from the 2023 general elections and ongoing power tussles between camps loyal to Wike and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Party insiders say the crisis could escalate unless urgent steps are taken to reconcile the warring factions. Meanwhile, loyalists of Damagum have dismissed the suspension as illegal and of no effect, insisting that due process was not followed.
As the crisis festers, political observers warn that the internal wrangling could threaten the PDP’s chances of presenting a united front ahead of upcoming state and national elections.
The party’s national secretariat in Abuja has yet to issue an official statement on the development.
