Postgraduate education remains relevant for economic growth – UNILAG
Prof. Abraham Osinubi, the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Lagos, says that postgraduate education remains relevant to enhancing sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
He made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
According to Osinubi, who is also the Director of Medilag Consult, UNILAG, postgraduate education provides innovative researches, which are cornerstones of driving sustainable economic growth.
“No nation or country can develop without the education system, especially postgraduate education.
“This is because postgraduate education unlocks great potential to advance knowledge, new policies, academic and economic researches for universities, private sectors, industries and governments.
“The synergy between postgraduate education and private sector are very essential for our nation and the world in general,” he said.
Osinubi, however, added that there was the need to bridge the gap between postgraduate education and the private sector through collaboration and mentorship.
“We do not want our research projects to end up on the shelves of universities, teachers, lecturers, supervisors, rather it should instigate innovative synergies among the sectors to propel economic growth and development.
“At UNILAG postgraduate studies, we see ourselves at the forefront by co-partnering and co-creating with the private sector on how we can drive the force for economic growth,” Osinubi said.
He noted that some of the challenges facing postgraduate education in Nigeria were limited funding, lack of curriculum revision, gap between postgraduate education and private sectors, among others.
“The private sector can play a major role in funding, collaborating and investing in university research that can contribute to solve the challenges,’’ Osinubi said.
He added that in UNILAG, teaching was for possible solutions through discussions, which resulted into this year’s annual lecture (2023/2024 academic session) slated for Sept. 3 at J.F Ade-Ajayi Auditorium on the institution’s campus.
“We are bringing the private sector and experts together, therefore, participants should expect a robust interaction and unique discussion.
“The theme of the lecture is ‘Innovative Synergies, Harnessing the Power of Collaboration between Postgraduate Education and the Private Sector for Sustainable Economic Growth’.
“The Chairman of the lecture is Dr John Momoh, Chairman, Channels Media Group, and the Guest Speaker will be Mr Olaniyi Yusuf, the Chairman, Nigerian Economic Summit Group,” Osinubi said.
