“Rise in Violent Crimes Forces Nigeria Police to Reinstate Tinted Glass Enforcement”

By Paul Ebi

Abuja – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will resume the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy starting 2nd January 2026, citing a surge in criminal activities linked to vehicles with unauthorized tinted windows.

In an official statement, the Force clarified that although a court matter is ongoing regarding the policy, enforcement was never legally restrained. The temporary suspension of enforcement, the statement noted, was intended to allow motorists sufficient time to regularize their documentation and complete the registration process without undue pressure.

Recent security trends, however, reveal that some individuals and organized criminal groups have exploited vehicles with unauthorized tinted glass to conceal their identities while committing crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent acts. As a result, the NPF deemed it necessary to reinstate full enforcement as a proactive public safety measure.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured that the renewed enforcement would be carried out professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in full compliance with existing laws. He emphasized the Force’s commitment to public safety and the rule of law, while collaborating with stakeholders to keep communities secure.

Motorists are urged to obtain the required Tinted Glass Permits through approved channels and ensure that their vehicles meet legal standards.

The announcement was made by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, ANIPR, MIPRA, Force Public Relations Officer, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
