Senegal PM launches probe into massive corruption scandal

ON Thursday, Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, announced the launch of investigations into what he described as ‘widespread corruption’ during the previous administration, accusing former President Macky Sall’s government of financial mismanagement and manipulation of public funds.

Speaking to journalists, Sonko criticised the former administration’s handling of national finances, particularly its policy of accumulating debt without transparency. ‘The policy of unbridled indebtedness under Macky Sall has led to the misuse of resources in a non-transparent manner, fostering widespread corruption,’ Sonko stated, emphasising his commitment to addressing what he termed the ‘embezzlement of public funds on a massive scale.’

Radical change promised by new leadership

Sonko, alongside President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, assumed office in March 2024 after winning on a platform focused on social justice, sovereignty, and pan-Africanism. Their victory raised hopes across Senegal, a country grappling with economic challenges such as high living costs and unemployment.

Faye and Sonko pledged to bring about radical change, with a particular focus on rooting out corruption and restoring transparency in government. Upon taking office in April, President Faye tasked Sonko with conducting a comprehensive review of the country’s financial health to assess the extent of the previous administration’s alleged mismanagement.

Shocking findings from financial review

The government released the results of the financial review on Thursday, revealing what Sonko described as a ‘catastrophic’ situation. ‘We had no idea things were this bad,’ Sonko said, accusing the former authorities of falsifying financial data and misleading international partners regarding the country’s economic stability.

At the same press conference, Justice Minister Ousmane Diagne addressed the legal implications of the findings, stating that the alleged financial misconduct could amount to criminal activity. ‘These actions appear to be criminal in nature, which judicial authorities will investigate further,’ Diagne confirmed.

Promises of accountability

The new government has promised to ensure accountability for the alleged misdeeds of the previous regime, with investigations likely to focus on financial irregularities, debt accumulation, and the alleged embezzlement of public funds. Sonko and Faye’s administration has vowed to restore trust in Senegal’s governance and implement reforms aimed at improving transparency and economic justice.

With these steps, the government hopes to address Senegal’s economic woes and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth, while holding those responsible for any wrongdoing to account. The investigations are expected to be closely monitored both within Senegal and by international observers.

The new leadership in Senegal, led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, has set a bold agenda for reform, beginning with a thorough investigation into corruption claims under the previous administration. As the country looks to turn a new page, these investigations may play a crucial role in determining the future direction of Senegal’s governance and economic recovery.
