The Southern Ijaw Local Government Council has directed the immediate cancellation of plans by a faction in the Ogboinbiri Community to constitute and inaugurate committees without government authorization.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Council said it had received credible information that a group within the Ogboinbiri Community was making arrangements to form and inaugurate committees, a move the Council described as a violation of existing government directives and a potential trigger for renewed crisis in the area.
“It has come to the knowledge of the Government of Southern Ijaw that a faction in Ogboinbiri Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area is intending to constitute and inaugurate committees in that community, thereby undermining orders of Government, with the intentions to witch-hunt unsuspecting members of the community and other residents in Ogboinbiri,” the statement read in part.
The government expressed concern that such actions could heighten tensions among already divided factions in Ogboinbiri, stressing that it would not tolerate any attempt to undermine peace and lawful authority.
“As a Government that is closest to the people, and who will be most affected, we have assured the people of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of our continuous courage to protect their lives and properties, and cannot fold our hands to allow few individuals undermine the decisions of Government,” the statement added.
Consequently, the Council has directed the immediate cancellation of any planned or ongoing committee constitution and inauguration in Ogboinbiri, unless expressly approved by the Government.
Security agencies in Ogboinbiri and surrounding communities have been instructed to take swift action to stop any such activities scheduled for Sunday, October 26, 2025, or any future date without official authorization.
Factional leaders and their supporters were also urged to respect all existing government orders to maintain peace and stability in the area.
The statement was signed by Ayebaitari Easterday, Chief Press Secretary, on behalf of the Executive Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Council.
