Sowore Decries “Broken” Nigerian Justice System After Release: “The Fight for Justice Must Never Stop”

By Passman Akpos

Human rights activist and founder of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned what he described as the “broken and sold” state of Nigeria’s justice system following his release from detention earlier today.

In a heartfelt message shared shortly after regaining his freedom, Sowore expressed deep sorrow for inmates still languishing in prison, many of whom he said are behind bars simply because they are poor or lack a voice in society.

> “There’s nothing more painful than seeing innocent people left behind in prison,” Sowore said. “When I was being released today, I felt guilt because I left behind children or adults whose only ‘crime’ is being poor or voiceless while the powerful walk free.”

He added that his experience served as a “brutal reminder” of systemic injustice in the country, saying,

> “Justice in Nigeria is often broken and sold. Every wrongful imprisonment steals time, hope, and dignity — and that’s why the fight for justice must never stop.”

Sowore, who has been a consistent critic of government corruption and an advocate for democratic reform through the #RevolutionNow movement, has faced multiple arrests and detentions linked to his activism and outspoken criticism of political elites.

His latest remarks have sparked renewed discussion about prison reform, human rights abuses, and the treatment of detainees awaiting trial in Nigeria’s congested correctional facilities.

Supporters online have echoed his sentiments, using the hashtag #RevolutionNow to call for systemic changes in the judicial process and greater accountability for those in power.
