Senator Sunday Agadaga Dumps PDP for APC, Cites Internal Crisis and “Season for Change”

Abuja — Another prominent political figure from Bayelsa State has joined the wave of defections shaking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Senator Sunday Agadaga, representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District, has formally announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement came on Wednesday during plenary at the National Assembly, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Senator Agadaga’s letter titled “Resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party and Formal Movement to the All Progressives Congress.”
In his letter, Senator Agadaga invoked both wisdom and scripture to justify his decision, writing:
> “Change is the only permanent thing in life. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens. I believe the time for change in my political journey has come.”
Acknowledging that the move was a difficult one, Agadaga reflected on his long and loyal years within the PDP, where he rose through the ranks holding several key positions — including Permanent Secretary, Executive Chairman of the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board under former Governor Goodluck Jonathan, Special Adviser under Governor Seriake Dickson, and later, Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri.
He expressed appreciation to the PDP for shaping his political career but said unresolved internal disputes and divisions within the party had made it impossible to continue.
> “The fact that I stand today as a distinguished senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is due to the benevolence of the PDP when it was intact,” Agadaga stated. “But the situation today is far from what it used to be.”
Political observers see Agadaga’s defection as another major blow to the PDP in Bayelsa, a state long considered one of its strongholds. His exit adds to a growing list of influential figures who have recently switched allegiance to the APC — a development many believe could reshape the state’s political dynamics ahead of future elections.
With Agadaga’s crossover, the balance of political influence in Bayelsa East — and perhaps beyond — may be entering yet another season of change.
