The history of Tarakiri Clan in Bayelsa state, has over the years faced with conflicting and complicating stories as to its true origin. Many have put in efforts to know the true background story and this great ancestral history of one of the arguably largest clan, spanning through many local government areas in Bayelsa and part of Delta state.
In this view, Tarakirivoice Newspaper took it upon herself and visited a part-time historian, Hon Seibokuro Idiomo to herald the true ancestral history of the hereditary Clan.
History
The history of Tarakiri Clan can be traced to its ancestor, Tarakiri-Owei.
Tarakiri as a Clan was named by the offsprings of Tarakiri-Owei, who was as of then the first person to access the geographical location of the clan, dating back to the precolonial era.
According to historian, Tarakiri-Owei located the area when he flee during a communal war at his original settlement and settled there with his wife, Tugbagha. The couple gave birth to Five children and they expanded their coasts by establishing various communities in their adult age.
These children namely; Ikiobiri-Owei, founded Isampou community, Angalabiri-Owei, whom his children founded the sister-communities, Egbema-Angalabiri and Angalabiri community, Okolobiri-Owei, founded Buluo-Orua and Toru-Orua communities, Mrs Aran established Aramabiri compound in Angalabiri community, and lastly Muluku-Owei.
History has it that communities that made up of the Tarakiri Clan, has never been handpicked to its fold, rather, hereditary to a common ancestor, Tarakiri-Owei, as a result it was said to be formidable, indivisible and indifferent.
Tarakiri clan is govern by an elected King and a Council of Chiefs selected from various communities in the clan.
As they say, “History defines us, it makes us who and what we are.”
