President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their courage and sacrifice in defending the nation, calling on all citizens to show greater support and encouragement for the military.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) Conference in Abuja, the President said members of the armed forces and security agencies “put their lives on the line daily” to preserve Nigeria’s territorial integrity and must not be taken for granted.
> “Yes, we are challenged by terrorism, banditry, and others. We recognise that. Are we doing something about it? Are we inspiring the armed forces? Are we encouraging them to fight?” Tinubu asked. “They put their lives on the line to defend the sovereignty of this country. It is our responsibility.”
His remarks come amid persistent insecurity across several regions, prompting renewed calls for the Federal Government to intensify efforts against terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes.
Global and Domestic Reactions
Earlier this month, former U.S. President Donald Trump described the spate of killings in Nigeria as a “mass slaughter” and warned that Christianity faces an existential threat in the country. In response, the Nigerian Government urged understanding, insisting it is making “tangible progress” in its counterterrorism campaign.
Last week, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepen international cooperation and sustain the fight against terrorism.
> “The task ahead is immense,” he said. “But we are resolved to move forward with unity and purpose—to defeat terrorism and build a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient Nigeria.”
81% Drop in Terror-Related Deaths
According to the Presidency, Nigeria has recorded an 81 percent decrease in terror-related deaths since 2015, reflecting what it described as improved counter-insurgency operations and stronger collaboration between security forces and local communities.
It added that more than 13,000 terrorists have been neutralised and over 124,000 fighters and their dependents have surrendered to Nigerian authorities in the past year. Meanwhile, 2.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have reportedly returned home as normalcy gradually returns to formerly affected communities.

Tinubu’s remarks have stirred widespread conversation among Nigerians, especially following the recent controversy involving FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a naval officer who refused to obey an alleged unlawful order.
Many citizens interpreted the President’s praise of the armed forces as a subtle endorsement of professionalism and discipline within the military—implicitly distancing himself from Wike’s actions.
Reactions on social media were swift:
