Tebogo cruises to 100m win at Diamond League in Rome

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo stormed to an impressive win in the 100m at the Rome Diamond League meet on Friday.

The Olympic 200m champion eased off with 15m to go and glanced back at his competitors as he crossed the line in 9.87 seconds.

Former world champions Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley, both of the United States, finished in second and third with times of 9.92 and 9.95 respectively.

Great Britain’s Jeremiah Azu was eighth in 10.17 as home favourite and Tokyo Olympics champion Marcell Jacobs came last in the nine-man field.

Daryll Neita, a silver medallist in the 4x100m for Team GB at the Paris Olympics, was third in the women’s 200m, clocking 22.46, as American Brittany Brown won in 22.00.

Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi ran the second fastest time ever in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, a brilliant eight minutes and 44.39 seconds.

The 24-year-old, who won Paris gold in an Olympic record, said: “I looked at the time after the race and I went, ‘oh, no!’.

“Í was really expecting that record and I was going for it. I definitely feel I should break it and I believe it will happen.”

There was also a world-leading time the women’s 100m hurdles with Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent winning in a national record 12.24.

Meanwhile, three-time Olympic champion Ryan Crouser set a meeting record of 22.79m in the men’s shot put. The American beat Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri into second place.
