Tension as Nigeria Risks “Terrorist State” Label — Princewill Odidi Warns

Public policy analyst and international development expert, Princewill Odidi, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s growing reputation abroad, warning that the country may be “one step away from being declared a terrorist state.”
In a statement shared on social media, Odidi wrote, “We are one step to being declared a terrorist state. We are now a ‘country of concern’. I have read several commentaries on social media and the Nigerian press on this topic. I just laughed because I see we just do not get it. However, it is too sensitive for my analysis.”
He urged Nigerians to reflect deeply on the international narrative surrounding the country, noting that the implications of being labeled a “country of concern” by global powers are far-reaching.
Odidi questioned the timing of the growing international discourse branding Nigeria as a nation of instability, asking, “Why do you think this narrative is gaining momentum now and what are the implications of a nation being called a ‘country of concern,’ one step to being designated a ‘terrorist state’?”
According to him, such designations often have more to do with geopolitical maneuvering and international strategy than with mere domestic incidents of insecurity. “Only those who understand the ‘games that nations play’ will understand this narrative,” he added, implying that external interests may be shaping the global perception of Nigeria’s internal crisis.
Global Concern Over Nigeria’s Security
Nigeria has in recent years faced mounting criticism from international observers over widespread insecurity, religious tensions, and human rights abuses. Western governments and international organizations have frequently warned about the country’s deteriorating security situation, particularly in the North, where terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to operate.
Analysts warn that being designated a “country of concern” can lead to diplomatic isolation, trade restrictions, travel bans, and reduced foreign investment — all of which could further strain Nigeria’s struggling economy.
Odidi’s comments reflect a growing fear among political commentators that Nigeria’s image abroad is rapidly declining, and that continued instability could push the nation closer to international sanctions or even a formal designation as a “terrorist state.”
As global scrutiny intensifies, many Nigerians are now calling on the government to take urgent steps to restore international confidence, strengthen national unity, and address the root causes of insecurity and mistrust within its borders.
