“ ‘This Is a Calculated Setup!’ — Nigerians Rally Behind VDM as AI Video Debate Escalates”

The controversy surrounding Nigerian social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VDM, has continued to spark heated reactions online following allegations that a viral video and voice note linked to him were AI-generated.
Public commentator Ossai Ovie Success openly criticized VDM’s handling of the controversy, accusing him of failing to directly deny the authenticity of the circulating content.
Speaking during an online exchange that has now gained traction across social media platforms, Ossai argued that even if the video was manipulated using artificial intelligence, VDM should have immediately and clearly addressed the public to dismiss it as fake.
According to him, “Even if the video is AI-generated, what stops him from debunking it and letting the general public know it’s fake? Instead, he went on camera insulting everybody and calling the President’s spokesman stupid.”
The remarks appear to reference VDM’s recent outburst directed at presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, a reaction that has further polarized public opinion.
However, many Nigerians online strongly disagreed with Ossai’s position, insisting that the burden of proof lies with those making the allegation, not the accused.
Several social media users defended VDM, arguing that emotional reactions or insults do not amount to an admission of guilt. Others maintained that the viral clip and voice note bore obvious signs of AI manipulation and should never have been treated as verified evidence in the first place.
One commenter wrote, “He who alleges must prove. You cannot demand that someone prove innocence over content that has not even been authenticated.”
Another user added, “Someone with normal senses doesn’t need VDM to tell them the video and voice note are AI-generated.”
Supporters also accused some political actors of attempting to weaponize misinformation against the activist, warning that the increasing sophistication of AI technology poses serious risks to public trust and political discourse.
Legal observers joining the debate argued that any genuine attempt to prosecute the matter in court would first require forensic verification of the audio and video materials before any allegation could stand legally.
The controversy has once again reopened national conversations around misinformation, AI-generated media, online accountability, and the growing influence of digital activists in Nigeria’s political climate.
While critics continue to condemn VDM’s confrontational style, supporters insist that anger or offensive language should not be confused with evidence of wrongdoing.
