The Pentagon is drafting plans for a full withdrawal of US troops from Syria, reports claimed, citing two defence officials.
This comes shortly after US president Donald Trump’s remark that the American military’s involvement in foreign countries serves no useful purpose.
The US troops entered Syria in 2014 on the pretext of defeating ISIS and have since maintained a few thousand troops in the country, despite never being invited by Damascus.
According to reports, US defence officials under Trump have begun preparing withdrawal plans, with timelines ranging from 30 to 90 days
Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, met with senior military commanders at the headquarters of US Central Command in Tampa, Florida, on Friday, where he was briefed by the security officials about the prevailing situation in the Middle East.
Commenting on media reports suggesting that he had informed Israel of the imminent pullout, Trump said last week, “We’ll determine that we’re not involved in Syria.”
“Syria is its own mess. They have enough messes over there. They don’t need us involved,” he added.
The Israeli media reported that the claims of the US pulling out its troops from Syria have caused security concerns in Tel Aviv.
In December 2018, during his first term, Trump announced plans to withdraw US troops stationed in Syria. The decision faced setbacks as Defence Secretary James Mattis resigned in protest.
After the fall of the Assad government in Syria in December 2024 and the subsequent takeover by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), the Pentagon acknowledged that the number of American troops present in Syria is beyond 2000 compared to earlier estimates of 900 soldiers.
Meanwhile, Assad and Moscow have repeatedly denounced the US military presence as an illegal occupation, stressing that Washington was never granted permission to station troops in Syria.
The latest claims about the potential withdrawal from Syria came as Trump announced on Tuesday a proposal that includes a plan to “take over” Gaza.
He did not rule out deploying US troops to the Palestinian enclave, vowing to “do what is necessary.”
