University Of Lagos Bans Skitmakers, Filmmakers From Using Campus For Video Productions Without Approval

The university said the move was necessary to protect the integrity of its academic environment and safeguard the institution’s image from being misrepresented in unregulated content.
The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has announced a ban on the unauthorised use of its campus, including hostels and other facilities, for video production by skitmakers, filmmakers, and content creators.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the institution’s Head of Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university warned that the increasing trend of individuals using its premises for skits, films, and other cinematographic activities without approval had become a serious concern.
The university said the move was necessary to protect the integrity of its academic environment and safeguard the institution’s image from being misrepresented in unregulated content.
“The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pop, etc.) and cinematographic activities, without appropriate authorisation,”
The statement read in part“The University has established procedures guiding the use of its premises and environment for any form of recording or content production.”
The school noted that the “procedures are designed to ensure safety, decorum, and integrity of our academic and residential spaces, as well as protect the image and reputation of the University.”
UNILAG directed that any individual or group, whether students, staff members, or external collaborators, intending to record any video content on campus must first obtain official approval from the school’s communication unit.
While stating that it “encourages creativity and responsible expression,” the university emphasised that such creative activities must align strictly with institutional guidelines.
“Members of the University community and general public are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility,” the statement added.
The new restriction comes amid a growing trend of content creators and skitmakers using public institutions, including universities, as settings for their comic and social commentary videos.
Interestingly, the University of Lagos has in recent years produced some of Nigeria’s most popular skitmakers.
In January 2024, popular content creator Muhammed Gilmore graduated from the university with a BSc in Chemistry.
Eight months later, another renowned skitmaker, Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie, popularly known as Brain Jotter, also completed his studies and left the institution.
