Wild animals take over Maiduguri streets after devastating flood
Crocodiles, snakes, and other dangerous animals have taken over the streets as Maiduri faced its worst flood in over 30 years.
The animals invaded the streets after the flood ravaged the Maiduguri Zoo, popularly referred to as Sanda Kyarimi Park located in the city centre.
It was gathered that the areas suspected to have been taken over by the animal are the Post Office and Monday Market which are located near the Shehu Kyarimi Park (Zoo).
The flood which spread across major centres in the city started around 1 a.m. on Tuesday and has displaced many families living around Lagos Street, Modugari, Gwange, Monday Market, and a few other places.
It was also gathered that, apart from the Shehu’s palace, some parts of University of Maiduguri and its Teaching Hospital, Gwange, Moromoro, State Lowcost, 500 Abbagana housing estate, popular Monday Market, Lagos Streets, NUJ Centre, Government House is also submerged, leaving millions of people displaced with property worth billions of naira destroyed.
One of the residents in Maiduguri, Kabiri Sani said that the zoo was flooded this morning, and was sure that animals would escape.
“Early this morning, I left Wulari to Polo, while passing through the zoo area, with the water level I saw, I was shocked and I began to fear because I know the calibre of wild animals in that zoo,(sic)” he claimed.
Another resident residing in Gwange, Salamatu Mohammed said that she and her family have been displaced and are currently forced to leave the environment because of the news that the zoo was already flooded.
He said, “I left immediately I was able to rescue my properties and myself. I cannot stay in that area because I am sure that animals are currently outside.”
However, a circulating picture on social media shows an Ostrich that escaped from the zoo on the street in an area close to Borno ICAN’s office.
The flood in Maiduguri is its worst since 1994. The flood is reportedly due to the overflow of the Alau Dam, which has been filled to capacity for the past week.
In a statement issued early Tuesday, titled “Flooding Alert for River Bank Residents,” Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, called for the immediate evacuation of affected areas.
Tar also urged residents in the affected areas to follow designated evacuation routes for their safety.
