The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has distributed 42,000 Metric Tonnes of food commodities to vulnerable Nigerians.
The Spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Abdullahi Maiwada said this at the monthly news conference organised by the Strategic Communication Interagency Policy Committee (SCIPC).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the distribution was in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu, aimed at providing succour to vulnerable Nigerians across the country
The conference was held at the NCS headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
Maiwada read the text of the joint security briefing.
He said that the initiative was carried out in coordination with key stakeholders including the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Department of State Services, anti-corruption agencies, and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
He said that NEMA was coordinating relief interventions, with current flood impacts reported as affecting 29 states, 154 local government areas, and displacing 225,169 people.
“Overall, 611,201 individuals have been impacted, 2,119 injured, 201 lives lost, 83,457 houses damaged, and 115,265 hectares of farmland affected, “ he said.
He said that during the period under review, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) also arrested a syndicate involved in a one million dollars fraud, and identified impersonators posing as its staff.
According to Maiwada, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), arrested healthcare workers for diverting supplies.
He said that the commission also uncovered tax evasion issues involving the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and other Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and recovered more than N21 million.
