At 78, Ex-Defence Chief Ogomudia Chases PhD, Sparks Debate on Lifelong Learning

The pursuit of knowledge has no age limit, as former Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Alexander Odeareduo Ogomudia (Rtd), has continued his academic journey at the age of 78, drawing admiration during the 2026 Doctoral Research Workshop and Conference at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna State.
The conference, organised by the NDA Postgraduate School’s Centre for Critical Thinking, brought together Ph.D. students, researchers, senior military officers, academics, intelligence personnel and invited guests.
According to participant Wisdom Oniekpar Ikuli, one of the defining moments of the opening ceremony was when the Commandant of the NDA, Major General OT Olatoye, paid glowing tribute to the former Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Staff before inviting him to the high table alongside the academy’s leadership.
Ikuli described the gesture as a demonstration of humility and respect for distinguished service, noting that Ogomudia’s decision to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) after reaching the pinnacle of his military career was a powerful lesson in lifelong learning.
He said the retired general was not pursuing the degree for employment but to contribute further to academic knowledge, attain personal fulfilment and continue inspiring younger generations.
The conference also featured addresses by the Academy Provost, Prof. BJ Ajibuah, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. NA David, and a keynote presentation by Prof. DO Alabi.
Reflecting on the event, Ikuli said studying alongside serving and retired senior military officers, including Major Generals, Air Vice Marshals, Rear Admirals, Commodores and Brigadier Generals, had strengthened his belief that education remains a lifelong pursuit regardless of age or status.
He urged young Nigerians to draw inspiration from accomplished leaders who continue to seek knowledge despite their achievements, stressing that education should be pursued voluntarily as a pathway to innovation, leadership and national development.
Ikuli, who revealed he is 50 years old with two bachelor’s degrees, two master’s degrees, a postgraduate diploma and a Ph.D. in view, described his academic journey as only just beginning, adding that ideas and knowledge remain the foundation of progress.
