Cholera: Oyo state confirms 23 cases, 1 death

Oyo state government has confirmed that 27 cases of cholera were recorded out of 245 suspected cases reported between Jan. 1 and Oct. 7.

The state commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwasherimi Ajetumobi stated this on Tuesday in Ibadan while briefing newsmen at the end of the weekly state executive council meeting.

Ajetunmobi said that one death was recorded as a result of the dreaded disease during the period under review, adding that the only death recorded was a patient brought from Lagos state.

She disclosed that nine cholera patients who were currently on admission at the Infectious Disease Center, Olodo, Ibadan were responding to treatment and would soon be discharged.

The Commissioner equally informed newsmen that the executive council, during the meeting, deliberated on her ministry’s request for approval of N210.2 million as counterpart fund, for the support of the mosquito net campaign.

She said that the campaign for the use of mosquito net would come up in May 2025.

“As part of the activities toward the net campaign, there are some things that we need to do and that is the reason for the request.

“The counterpart fund is to cater for the micro planning which includes, logistics, flag-off, net campaign, storage and distribution across the 33 local government areas of the state.

“The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), initiative, has procured a total of 5,670, 644 nets for the state and the state is expected to pay a counterpart fund of N 210, 243.

“The burden of severe malaria in the state proportionally affect the vulnerable population particularly children under five, pregnant women and the elderly,” she noted.

The commissioner assured the people of the state that every household would benefit from the net distribution.

Ajetunmobi, however, said that consideration would be accorded the vulnerable persons particularly children under five years, pregnant women and the elderly.
