Biya Hands Power To Son, Cameroon Boils Over Dynasty Fears

By Paul Ebi

A major political shake-up has unfolded in Cameroon following a controversial new appointment by President Paul Biya, who has named his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President and Head of the Armed Forces.

The announcement, contained in an official decree dated April 4, 2026, effectively places Franck Biya at the heart of both the country’s political leadership and military command. In a further consolidation of power, he was also appointed Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence, giving him sweeping influence over Cameroon’s security architecture.

According to the presidency, the appointments were made in accordance with constitutional provisions and existing defence laws. The decree explicitly confirmed Franck Biya as Vice President of the republic while simultaneously designating him as the nation’s top military authority.

The move comes amid heightened political tension following President Biya’s recent inauguration for an unprecedented eighth term in office. At 93, the long-serving leader—who has ruled Cameroon since 1982 after succeeding Ahmadou Ahidjo—remains one of Africa’s longest-standing heads of state.

The last election, which saw Biya reportedly secure 54 percent of the vote, has remained a source of deep controversy. His main challenger, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, rejected the outcome, alleging widespread electoral fraud and declaring himself the rightful winner.

While the government dismissed the allegations, and the Constitutional Council upheld the results citing insufficient evidence, the aftermath triggered protests across several parts of the country and drew sharp international scrutiny over the state of democracy in Cameroon.

Despite the unrest, President Biya defended the electoral process as credible and praised security agencies for maintaining order.

However, the elevation of his son to such powerful positions is already igniting fierce debate, with critics warning that the move signals a possible dynastic succession and further concentration of power within one family—raising fresh concerns about governance, transparency, and the future of democracy in Cameroon.
