By Passman Akpos

Tension has engulfed the University of Benin (UNIBEN) community after a yet-to-be-identified student was reportedly shot dead inside his vehicle near the main gate of the institution’s Ugbowo campus in Benin City, Edo State.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Sunday under circumstances that are still unclear, has sparked fear among students, residents, and staff, while raising fresh concerns over growing insecurity around the university environment.According to reports gathered by SaharaReporters, the deceased student had just completed his semester examinations before he was attacked.

A disturbing video from the scene showed the victim slumped lifeless inside his car with a visible gunshot wound on his forehead. The footage also revealed bullet holes piercing through the vehicle’s windscreen, suggesting a violent and targeted attack.

Eyewitnesses and residents were seen gathered around the scene in shock as the victim’s body remained inside the vehicle, creating a tense atmosphere near the campus entrance.

The shocking killing has left many students in fear, with some expressing concerns over the safety of lives and property around the university.

Reacting to the incident, the management of the University of Benin distanced the institution from the killing, stating that preliminary indications suggest the attack may be connected to suspected cult-related violence occurring outside the university environment.

In an official statement, the university expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident and urged students and staff members to remain calm, vigilant, and security conscious while continuing their academic activities peacefully.

The institution further reassured members of the university community of its commitment to maintaining safety and security within the campus.

Meanwhile, efforts to get an official response from the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, were unsuccessful as calls to her mobile phone were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

The incident has once again reignited public debate over cult violence, student safety, and the urgent need for stronger security presence around tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
