By Passman Akpos

A Bayelsa-based journalist and blogger, Preye Bagou, has formally resigned his membership from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need to realign with the ruling political structure for greater impact.

In a statement Obtained by Tarakirivoice on Wednesday, Bagou said his decision was driven by a desire to contribute more effectively to Nigeria’s political development through what he described as a more “viable and influential platform.”

He stressed his commitment to progressive governance, national unity, and grassroots development, noting that the APC offers stronger opportunities to actualize those ideals.

“I have taken this decision after careful thought and for personal reasons that I believe are in my best interest at this time,” Bagou stated, adding that the move followed extensive consultations with close associates and stakeholders.

In a surprising twist, Bagou publicly apologized to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, and his deputy, Dr. Peter Akpe, for what he described as a “hasty” earlier decision that strained his relationship with the state leadership.

“As a fast-growing young politician, I have thought it wise not to abandon well-established relationships in government, where I served in different capacities as Technical Assistant and Senior Special Assistant,” he said.

Although Bagou did not disclose any immediate political ambition, political analysts interpret his defection as a calculated repositioning ahead of future opportunities within the APC.

APC stakeholders in Bayelsa have reportedly welcomed his return, describing it as a boost to the party’s grassroots mobilization and media influence.

However, his move has sparked widespread criticism and heated debate, particularly on social media, where many supporters and observers accused him of inconsistency, betrayal, and political opportunism.

Several reactions trailed the announcement:Some critics questioned his leadership credibility, especially regarding his role in mobilizing supporters into the NDC.

“Why you go carry people enter NDC WhatsApp group, now you don dump them—how you wan do those people?” one commenter asked.Others expressed disappointment over what they described as a pattern of unstable political decisions:

“Today you are here, tomorrow you are there. This is why youths are not taken seriously,” another user lamented.

A supporter, however, welcomed his return to the APC, describing it humorously as a “homecoming to the winning party.”

Meanwhile, tensions escalated in the comment sections as Bagou himself fired back at critics, engaging in heated exchanges that further fueled public scrutiny over his conduct and political maturity.

Observers note that such defections—especially involving media personalities with grassroots influence—often have ripple effects on political alignments at the local level.

As reactions continue to pour in, Bagou’s political future now hangs in the balance, with many watching closely to see whether his latest move strengthens his relevance or further erodes public trust.
