Eight Detentions, One Mission: OCND Hails Apostle Perela As The Gani Fawehinmi Of The Niger Delta

By Passman Akpos

The spokesperson of the Oppressed Citizens of the Niger Delta (OCND), Malafapha Destiny, has described Apostle Daniel Ezekiel Perela as a symbol of resistance, justice and fearless advocacy in the Niger Delta, comparing his activism to the legacy of the late renowned human rights lawyer and activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN).

Destiny, in a statement made available to High Service News (HSN), and has obtained by Tarakirivoice, said Perela’s commitment to defending the oppressed, challenging injustice and confronting powerful interests across the Niger Delta reflects the principles that made Fawehinmi one of Nigeria’s most celebrated defenders of human rights and democratic freedoms.

According to the OCND spokesperson, Perela represents a tradition of activism in which the interests of ordinary citizens take precedence over personal comfort, political connections and the pursuit of individual benefits.

Quoting the philosophy of the late American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Destiny argued that the true measure of a person’s life lies in the positive impact they make on society and the legacy they leave for future generations.

“A man must stand for something that will not only benefit him but also serve generations unborn. That was the principle that guided Gani Fawehinmi, and it is the same spirit we see in Apostle Daniel Ezekiel Perela today,” Destiny stated.

Fawehinmi’s Legacy Of Resistance And Human Rights Advocacy

The comparison draws attention to the enduring legacy of Fawehinmi, who earned national recognition for his uncompromising defence of human rights, the rule of law and democratic governance.

Born on April 22, 1938, in Ondo State, Fawehinmi became one of Nigeria’s most prominent human rights lawyers, challenging successive military regimes and defending citizens whose rights were allegedly violated by those in positions of authority.

His legal practice and activism frequently brought him into conflict with powerful political and military interests. He endured arrests, detention and persecution but remained a prominent voice in Nigeria’s struggle for democratic freedoms and accountability.

Fawehinmi died on September 5, 2009, at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire human rights advocates and pro-democracy campaigners.

For Destiny, Perela’s activism reflects aspects of that tradition, particularly his alleged experiences with harassment, threats, arrests and detention in connection with his activities in the Niger Delta.

‘Perela Has Been Detained Eight Times,’ OCND Claims

Destiny alleged that Perela had faced repeated encounters with security agencies because of his activism and determination to challenge what he considers injustice in the region.

“In the history of the Niger Delta struggle, Apostle Daniel Ezekiel Perela has faced repeated harassment, threats, persecution and arrests because of his activism. He has reportedly been detained eight times in the custody of different security agencies, including the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the military, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Defence Intelligence Agency,” Destiny stated.

The allegations, as presented by the OCND spokesperson, underscore the concerns of Perela’s supporters regarding the treatment of activists who confront influential interests and raise questions about accountability in the Niger Delta.

However, the claims of repeated detention and the circumstances surrounding the incidents require independent verification and responses from the relevant security agencies.

Destiny maintained that Perela’s experiences had strengthened his standing among supporters who see his activism as part of a broader struggle for justice, human rights and fair treatment in the oil-producing region.

University Of Ibadan Shaped Perela’s Activism, Says Destiny

The OCND spokesperson also linked Perela’s approach to activism to his reported involvement in student activism at the University of Ibadan.

According to Destiny, Perela’s exposure to student movements and traditions of advocacy helped shape his understanding of resistance, public accountability and the responsibility of citizens to speak against injustice.

“Ezekiel is a product of the Gani Fawehinmi school of advocacy. His commitment to standing with the oppressed and confronting injustice reflects the spirit of a generation of activists who believe that silence in the face of oppression is not an option,” he said.

Destiny suggested that Perela’s approach reflects a broader tradition of Nigerian activism in which lawyers, students, journalists, community leaders and civil society campaigners have challenged policies and actions they consider unjust.

The comparison, however, remains Destiny’s assessment of Perela’s activism rather than an independently established equivalence between the two men’s careers and achievements.

Why Supporters Call Him Apostle

Beyond his record of activism, Destiny said Perela’s name carries symbolic significance for supporters who associate his work with courage, faith and the pursuit of justice.

He drew parallels between the biblical figures Daniel and Ezekiel and what he described as Perela’s determination to speak for oppressed communities in the Niger Delta.

“Daniel and Ezekiel were biblical figures through whom God worked mightily in the struggle for truth and the liberation of His people. Today, Apostle Daniel Ezekiel Perela is using advocacy as his instrument to speak for the oppressed and demand justice for the people of the Niger Delta,” Destiny said.

He added that this symbolism had helped him understand why Comrade Jude Gbabeyor reportedly gave Perela the title of Apostle.

For Perela’s supporters, Destiny explained, the title represents more than a religious designation. It reflects their perception of an activist who has chosen to associate himself with the struggles of vulnerable communities.

Perela’s Detention Becomes A Rallying Point For Supporters

Destiny further argued that Perela’s detention had become a rallying point for individuals and groups demanding justice, accountability and respect for fundamental human rights in the Niger Delta.

He expressed confidence that the growing attention surrounding the activist’s case could encourage more citizens to question what they regard as entrenched systems of domination and exclusion.

“I firmly believe that the wind of resistance blowing across the Niger Delta because of Apostle Perela’s detention will eventually challenge the structures of hegemony, wickedness, tyranny, selfishness and Pharaoh-like oppression. The people are increasingly determined to demand justice, and no society can permanently suppress the voices of citizens who are committed to freedom,” Destiny declared.

His comments reflect the position of Perela’s supporters, who believe that the circumstances surrounding the activist’s case should be examined within the broader context of human rights protection, freedom of expression and the treatment of civil society campaigners.

The allegations also raise broader questions about the relationship between security agencies and activists in the Niger Delta, a region where disputes over oil wealth, environmental degradation, political representation and resource control have shaped decades of public advocacy.

Nevertheless, establishing whether an individual’s rights have been violated requires examining the specific circumstances of the case, including the reasons for detention, the applicable legal procedures and any responses from the authorities involved.

‘The Niger Delta Struggle Is Bigger Than One Individual’

Destiny stressed that the struggle for justice in the Niger Delta should not be reduced to the personal experiences of one activist.

Instead, he said, Perela’s case should be understood within a wider demand for fairness, respect for fundamental human rights, accountability and equitable treatment for communities across the region.

He maintained that activism often involves personal sacrifices, particularly when individuals challenge powerful interests or draw public attention to issues that others may prefer to ignore.

According to him, the significance of Perela’s activism lies in the message his supporters believe it sends to a new generation: that speaking up for vulnerable people remains an important part of the struggle for a more accountable society.

Drawing a final parallel with Fawehinmi, Destiny argued that the value of an activist should not be determined by the power of those opposing him but by the principles he seeks to defend and his willingness to remain committed to them despite adversity.

For the OCND spokesperson and Perela’s supporters, the comparison with Fawehinmi represents a declaration that the tradition of fearless advocacy associated with Nigeria’s democratic struggle remains alive in the Niger Delta.

Whether Perela’s activism will ultimately attain the historical stature associated with Fawehinmi remains a matter for time, public scrutiny and the lasting impact of his work. What remains central to the debate is the broader question of how the rights of activists and ordinary citizens are protected when they challenge powerful institutions.

As calls for justice surrounding Perela’s case continue among his supporters, attention remains focused on the circumstances of his detention, the response of the relevant authorities and the wider implications for freedom of expression and human rights advocacy in the Niger Delta.
