The European Union has reaffirmed its strong backing for South Africa’s leadership of the G20, with European Council President Antonio Costa expressing full support during a recent phone call with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The conversation underscored the EU’s commitment to strengthening ties with South Africa, a key partner in advancing multilateral cooperation.
‘I highlighted the EU’s commitment to deepen ties with South Africa, as a reliable and predictable partner,’ Costa shared in a statement posted on X. He also expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming South Africa-EU bilateral summit scheduled for March 13, where both sides will engage in discussions aimed at consolidating their partnership and addressing pressing global issues.
Costa emphasised the EU’s support for South Africa’s G20 presidency, commending its ambition to enhance global collaboration through the Pact for the Future, which focuses on tackling urgent international challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and geopolitical stability.
South Africa’s commitment to democracy and multilateralism
In a separate statement, President Ramaphosa welcomed Costa’s support and noted the importance of EU-South Africa relations in promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Ramaphosa highlighted the recent formation of South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU), a coalition comprising the African National Congress (ANC) and nine other political parties. The GNU was established following the ANC’s inability to secure a two-thirds majority in the May 2024 parliamentary elections, demonstrating South Africa’s dedication to democratic principles and inclusive governance.
Ramaphosa stressed that both South Africa and the EU share common values rooted in democracy, human rights, dignity, and equality. He expressed his eagerness to engage in meaningful dialogue during the March summit to reinforce bilateral cooperation and discuss regional, continental, and global developments.
‘I look forward to working together with the leadership of the EU to ensure a successful G20, in line with our chosen theme, and to address the most pressing global challenges,’ Ramaphosa stated.
South Africa officially assumed the rotational G20 presidency in December 2024, marking a historic milestone as the first African nation to lead the influential group of major global economies. US to skip G20 Summit amid diplomatic tensions
While the EU has shown strong support for South Africa’s G20 leadership, diplomatic tensions have surfaced with the United States. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced last week that he would not attend the G20 summit scheduled to take place this month in Johannesburg, citing concerns over South Africa’s domestic and foreign policies.
Rubio’s decision follows recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who threatened to cut foreign aid to South Africa over allegations related to land expropriation policies and the alleged mistreatment of certain social groups. These tensions escalated when Trump signed an executive order freezing funds to Pretoria, citing South Africa’s controversial land reform initiatives and its involvement in the genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The US’s absence from the G20 summit underscores growing strains in US-South Africa relations, raising questions about the broader implications for international diplomacy within the G20 framework.
UN and China reaffirm commitment to G20 cooperation
Amid these tensions, the United Nations has reiterated the importance of the G20 as a critical platform for addressing global crises. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, emphasised the need for unity within the G20, urging member states to prioritise cooperation over conflict.
‘The Secretary-General believes that the G20 is an important group for dealing with international crises. He has worked very well with them and encourages all efforts to strengthen the group’s work. It’s important that it functions in a unified manner as much as possible,’ Haq stated during a press briefing.
In contrast to the US stance, China has confirmed its active participation in the G20. The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg from February 20 to 21. China’s presence reflects its ongoing commitment to multilateral cooperation, particularly in strengthening economic partnerships and addressing shared global challenges.
