Gov Diri Appoints New Governing Council for Niger Delta University

Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has approved the appointment of a new Governing Council for the Niger Delta University (NDU), signaling a fresh phase in the administration and strategic direction of the state-owned institution.

According to an official announcement from the Bayelsa State Government, renowned academic, Prof. Steven Odiowei, has been appointed Chairman of the Governing Council.

Other members appointed to the council include Dr. Timi Johnson, Biobelemoye Charles Onyema, Prof. Barclays Ayakoroma, Prof. Francis Sikoki, Warmate Jones Idikio, and Ibilate Benson Dadigi.

The council also includes key principal officers of the university, namely Prof. Allen Agih, who serves as a member, alongside Prof. Tombara Kingdom and Prof. Jonah Akekere.

The appointments are expected to strengthen the university’s governance structure and provide strategic oversight for academic excellence, infrastructure development, research advancement, and institutional growth.

Niger Delta University, located in Amassoma on Wilberforce Island, remains one of the leading higher institutions in the Niger Delta region, playing a critical role in manpower development and research across Bayelsa State and beyond.

The newly constituted council is expected to assume responsibility for policy direction, institutional oversight, and supporting the university’s vision of maintaining high academic standards while addressing emerging challenges in the tertiary education sector.
