NDC Zones 2027 Presidency to South, Moses Cleopas Faces Exit as Northern Chairman Takes Over

A major political realignment has emerged within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as the party officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South for a single four-year term, a decision that could force the exit of National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, in line with the party’s zoning principle.
The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention after a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, a member representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly, received overwhelming support from delegates.
Under the newly adopted arrangement, the South will produce the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election for only one term of four years, after which the ticket will automatically return to the North.
However, party insiders say the zoning decision carries far-reaching implications beyond the presidential race, particularly for the office of the National Chairman.
According to the NDC’s internal zoning structure, the positions of National Chairman and President cannot be occupied by individuals from the same geopolitical zone. The South is also barred from simultaneously holding the offices of Party Leader, National Chairman, and President.
This means that with the presidency now officially ceded to the South, the office of National Chairman must shift to the North, placing the current chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, under serious pressure to vacate the seat.
Political observers say the development significantly strengthens the chances of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and other southern aspirants expected to contest under the NDC platform in 2027.
The move is already generating intense political calculations across opposition circles, with many viewing it as a strategic attempt by the NDC to consolidate southern support while preserving northern succession after the single-term arrangement.
Analysts believe the convention decision could trigger internal power struggles, especially among northern stakeholders seeking control of the party structure through the National Chairmanship.
With the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) preparing for what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 election, the NDC’s zoning formula is likely to shape the next phase of opposition politics in Nigeria.
