Police arraign 5 in court over alleged assault on 72-year-old man

The Police in Ekiti on Tuesday, arraigned five men before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault.
The defendants; Mayowa Ajayi, 52, Taiwo Ajayi, 19, Kehinde Ajayi, 19, Ajayi Oluwaseyi, 34, Ogunsakin Ayomide, 15, are standing trial on a one-count charge of assault.
The prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants and one other at large committed the offence on Jan.7 at about 09:30 a.m in Iluomoba-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendants and their fleeing accomplice did assault the complainant, a 72-year-old man, Remi Babaniwura.
Oriyomi alleged that the defendants assaulted the complainant with dangerous weapons when they came for his son whom they had a misunderstanding with.
He said the offence contravened Section 186 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor thereafter requested for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.
While the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge, their counsel, Mr Opeyemi Esan, urged the court to grant them bail, with a promise that they would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, in his ruling, granted each of the defendants bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety each in like sum.
He adjourned the case till Feb.11 for hearing.
