Ukraine’s Starlink Drone Disruptions and Trump’s Russian Diesel Deal With Putin Raise Fresh Concerns Over U.S. Support for Kyiv as Russian Missiles Strike Ukraine

By Passman Akpos
KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s battlefield drone operations have reportedly suffered a setback after SpaceX, the American aerospace company owned by billionaire Elon Musk, imposed sudden speed restrictions on Starlink satellite communication terminals used on Ukrainian drones, raising fresh concerns about Kyiv’s dependence on American technology in its war against Russia.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Ukrainian officials said Wednesday that the restrictions disrupted military operations, with slower-flying attack drones potentially becoming easier targets for Russian air defence systems.
The development came as Kyiv endured a second consecutive night of Russian missile attacks, intensifying concerns over Ukraine’s ability to defend its capital amid growing uncertainty about the future of American support for its war effort.
Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, disclosed on social media that SpaceX had imposed a speed limit on Ukrainian Starlink terminals mounted on drones overnight.
The restrictions reportedly affected drone operations, which have become a critical component of Ukraine’s military strategy against Russian forces.
Starlink Restrictions Raise Battlefield Concerns
Starlink, a satellite internet network operated by SpaceX, has become an important communications tool for Ukraine’s military since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.
Ukrainian forces rely on the system for long-range drone missions, interceptor air-defence operations and logistics support for troops deployed along the front lines.
According to Beskrestnov, the sudden restrictions disrupted these operations, potentially reducing the effectiveness of drones used to strike Russian targets and defend Ukrainian positions.
The reported speed limitations have raised concerns because slower drones may give Russian forces more time to detect, track and intercept incoming attacks.
The development has also highlighted Ukraine’s vulnerability to changes in access to privately controlled satellite communications infrastructure, particularly when such technology plays a direct role in military operations.
However, the precise scope of the restrictions and their overall impact on Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities were not fully established in the report.
Zelenskyy Raises Alarm Over Missing Missile Warnings
The Starlink disruption coincided with another troubling development for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy said Ukraine had not received the usual advance warning from its Western partners about Russian ballistic missiles targeting the capital.
The Ukrainian president did not identify the specific countries or partners involved in the reported intelligence gap.
His remarks nevertheless triggered concerns that Ukraine could be losing access to intelligence that has helped its military anticipate Russian attacks and prepare its air defences.
U.S. President Donald Trump has maintained that Washington has not halted intelligence-sharing with Ukraine.
The absence of the usual warning, however, has fuelled questions about whether Kyiv can continue relying on its Western partners for timely intelligence as diplomatic tensions deepen.
Access to early-warning intelligence is particularly important for Ukraine because ballistic missiles can travel at extremely high speeds, leaving defenders with limited time to respond.
Trump’s Russia Policy Deepens Kyiv’s Anxiety
The latest developments have added to growing frustration among Ukrainian officials over the direction of U.S. policy under Trump.
According to the AP report, Ukrainian officials fear that American support for their war effort could be weakening, particularly in the areas of military intelligence and access to Starlink communications.
Trump has pursued efforts to negotiate an end to the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but those efforts have yet to produce a breakthrough in ending the fighting.
The U.S. president has also criticised Zelenskyy, saying Saturday that Ukraine needed a new president and suggesting that the Ukrainian leader had failed to do enough to end the conflict.
Trump additionally blamed Zelenskyy for high diesel prices in the United States, according to the report.
Meanwhile, a reported Trump agreement involving the importation of Russian diesel has further unsettled Ukrainian officials, who fear that moves to restore economic ties with Moscow could undermine international efforts to isolate Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
The developments have intensified concerns in Kyiv about whether Washington’s diplomatic engagement with Moscow could come at the expense of Ukraine’s military interests.
Ukraine’s Dependence on American Technology Under Scrutiny
The Starlink restrictions have exposed a significant challenge facing Ukraine: its dependence on privately operated technology that has become essential to modern warfare.
Although Starlink is a commercial satellite communications service, its role in Ukraine extends beyond ordinary internet access. The network supports communications for military units operating far from established infrastructure and helps maintain connectivity in areas affected by fighting.
Its use in drone operations has made it particularly valuable in a conflict where unmanned aircraft play a major role in reconnaissance, targeting and attacks against military positions.
Any restrictions affecting its battlefield use could therefore have consequences beyond internet connectivity, potentially influencing the speed, coordination and effectiveness of military operations.
The latest incident raises questions about how much control private technology companies can exercise over systems that have become strategically important during an international conflict.
It also underscores the risks faced by countries whose military capabilities depend heavily on infrastructure controlled by foreign companies.
A Critical Moment for Kyiv
For Ukraine, the reported Starlink restrictions and Zelenskyy’s concerns over missile warnings come at a sensitive moment in the war.
The country is continuing to defend itself against Russian attacks while seeking to preserve Western military, financial and intelligence support.
The developments have raised fresh questions about the reliability of that support and the potential consequences of deteriorating relations between Kyiv and Washington.
For now, Ukrainian officials face the challenge of maintaining effective battlefield operations while navigating uncertainty over the future of key American-backed capabilities.
Whether the reported Starlink restrictions will have a lasting impact on Ukraine’s drone campaign remains unclear. However, the incident has highlighted how decisions involving satellite technology and intelligence-sharing can have immediate implications on the battlefield. (AP).
