Afghan refugees in Pakistan and Iran are facing increasing pressure, with hundreds being forcibly deported and many others subjected to harsh treatment.
Reports indicate that between March 8 and March 14, a total of 674 Afghan families were expelled from both countries.
Iran deported 564 families through various border crossings, while Pakistan forced out 110 families, primarily through Spin Boldak, Pul-e-Abrisham, and Islam Qala.
The situation for Afghan migrants in Iran is becoming more difficult, as authorities have announced that from March 21, 2025, undocumented Afghan refugees will no longer have access to healthcare, education, or other essential services.
Many refugees have complained about increasing anti-migrant sentiment, arbitrary arrests, and deportations, even of those holding legal visas.
Reports suggest that Iranian police have been detaining migrants under various pretexts, adding to their insecurity.
In Pakistan, Afghan refugees are experiencing similar challenges. Authorities have intensified their crackdown in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, conducting raids and forcibly removing families.
Many refugees have been forced to auction off their belongings at low prices as they prepare for deportation. Some have reported that even those with valid visas or registration cards are facing expulsion.
Human rights organizations and refugee advocacy groups have urged Pakistan to stop the deportations.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) for Refugees recently released a statement condemning the arrests and harassment of Afghan refugees in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Several rights groups have also sent an open letter to the Pakistani government, calling for an immediate halt to forced deportations.
Afghan refugees continue to appeal to the Afghan government and international human rights organizations for support.
Many say they are being mistreated, facing discrimination, and living under constant fear of expulsion, despite having legal documentation.
