Bayelsa West on Fire: APC Throws ‘Ancient Warrior’ Agbiki Against Seriake Dickson, Can Dickson Survive?

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa West Senatorial District has produced High Chief Fidelis Agbiki as its candidate and flag bearer for the forthcoming senatorial election, setting the stage for what many observers describe as a major political showdown with incumbent Senator Seriake Dickson.
The primary election, which attracted top political figures and government officials, was attended by the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Peter Pereotubo Akpe, the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, and the Deputy Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Michael Ogbere, alongside other senior APC stakeholders.
Agbiki’s emergence has immediately triggered strong public debate across political circles, with many questioning whether he has the political strength to challenge Dickson, a former governor and serving senator widely seen as a dominant force in Bayelsa politics.
Some supporters dismissed the APC candidate’s chances, arguing that Dickson remains unbeatable in Bayelsa West.
“Nothing to fear, Dickson is a man who never loses,” one supporter declared confidently, while another added, “Senator Seriake Dickson till 2031.”
Others described the APC’s choice as a strategic move that may ultimately favor Dickson’s re-election.
“Now it’s getting clearer. Congratulations to Dickson in advance,” another political observer remarked.
However, not everyone shared that view. Some defended Agbiki, describing him as a seasoned political figure with deep roots and experience.“This man is a forebear of ancient wisdom, don’t underestimate him,” a supporter insisted, warning against dismissing the APC flag bearer too quickly.
Critics, however, questioned the wisdom of presenting an older political ally for such a crucial contest, arguing that Senate representation should be based on strength and public appeal rather than political reward.
“This man is too old to contest Senate; you can’t reward political allies with such a sensitive seat,” one critic said.
Despite the mixed reactions, APC leaders insist the party remains confident that Agbiki has what it takes to challenge Dickson and reshape the political balance in Bayelsa West.
With both camps already drawing battle lines, the Bayelsa West senatorial race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests in the state’s political landscape.
