“Crude Oil Flows, But Roads Don’t: Three Children Die in Bayelsa as Neglect Turns Rivers to Death Traps”

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State — Grief and outrage have gripped riverine communities in Bayelsa following a tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of three children, once again exposing the dangers of water transportation and the longstanding absence of road infrastructure in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when a wooden passenger boat traveling from Azuzuama in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to Yenagoa capsized near Ikebiri-1 community. The ill-fated vessel, a common means of transport for residents in the area, reportedly overturned around 1:00 a.m. under circumstances believed to involve overloading and mechanical failure.

Community sources revealed that the boat’s pumping machine—used to evacuate water—malfunctioned mid-journey, allowing water to accumulate and destabilize the vessel. The situation was worsened by the number of passengers onboard.

Tragically, the victims—two boys and a teenage girl aged between six and 15—were said to have been asleep when the accident occurred, leaving them with little chance of survival. Local divers later recovered their bodies from the river.One of the victims has been identified as Miss Peculiar Ivinbeke, whose death has sparked an emotional outpouring across the community. The bodies of the deceased are being transported back to Azuzuama for burial.

Residents say the tragedy is not an isolated incident but part of a recurring pattern in riverine communities where water transport remains the only viable option due to the absence of motorable roads.

“This is how we live—and die,” a community member lamented. “We produce the crude oil that sustains Nigeria’s economy, yet our children risk their lives daily just to travel.”

The incident has reignited criticism of the government, with many calling on the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address the infrastructural neglect of the Niger Delta. Despite decades of oil exploration and billions in revenue generated from the region, many communities remain accessible only by water.

Stakeholders argue that the continued reliance on unsafe wooden boats, often overloaded and poorly maintained, has turned rivers into “death traps,” particularly during night travel and adverse conditions.

Calls are also growing for stricter enforcement of marine safety regulations, including passenger limits, mandatory life jackets, and regular inspection of commercial boats.

As of press time, no official statement has been released by relevant authorities regarding the incident. Meanwhile, mourning families and community leaders are demanding not just condolences, but concrete action to prevent further loss of lives.

For many in Bayelsa’s riverine belt, the tragedy is a painful reminder that while crude oil continues to flow from their land, basic infrastructure like roads remains out of reach—at a deadly cost.
