Editorial: Ijaw Nation, Stop Worshipping Men—Build Institutions or Keep Failing

For decades, the Ijaw nation has produced courageous men and women who have fought for justice, resource control, environmental protection, and the dignity of the Niger Delta. Their sacrifices should never be forgotten. But history also teaches another lesson: no individual, no matter how influential, should become the sole symbol of a people’s hope.
A nation that depends entirely on one man is a nation that risks disappointment.
Today, many young Ijaw people celebrate powerful personalities, defend political figures, and fight bitter battles on social media in their names. Yet the most important question often goes unanswered: How has the ordinary Ijaw youth benefited?
Across the Niger Delta, thousands of young people remain unemployed. Communities still struggle with poor roads, inadequate healthcare, failing schools, and environmental degradation. Many families continue to live with the paradox of poverty in the midst of immense oil wealth.
These realities demand honest reflection.
The prolonged concerns expressed by many beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme over delayed stipends and student allowances have also raised important questions. Beneficiaries have publicly appealed for quicker payments, explaining the hardship such delays create for families and students pursuing higher education.
Their voices deserve attention.
Every respected leader with influence in the Niger Delta has an opportunity to speak for those who are struggling, regardless of political affiliations. Leadership is measured not only by influence in government circles but also by the willingness to stand with ordinary people during difficult moments.
This is not about attacking any individual.
It is about reminding every influential stakeholder that public trust carries public responsibility.
The Ijaw nation must also look inward. Too often, our politics revolves around personalities instead of institutions. We celebrate individuals while neglecting the systems that protect everyone equally.
Our future cannot depend on whether one powerful person speaks or remains silent.
It must depend on strong institutions, transparent governance, accountable leadership, and an informed citizenry.
Young people should never surrender their voices to politicians, businessmen, activists, or community leaders. Respect leaders, but never stop asking questions. Support good policies, not blind loyalty. Celebrate achievements, but never abandon accountability.
The progress of the Ijaw nation should never be measured by the success of a few influential individuals.
It should be measured by whether children have quality schools, whether graduates find jobs, whether communities have roads and hospitals, whether students receive the support promised to them, and whether peace brings genuine development to every corner of the Niger Delta.
History remembers those who built institutions more than those who accumulated influence.
The next generation of Ijaw leaders must understand that loyalty to the people is greater than loyalty to personalities.
No individual is bigger than the Ijaw nation.
No contract is greater than the welfare of the people.
No political alliance should silence legitimate concerns about the wellbeing of ordinary citizens.
The future of the Niger Delta will not be secured by waiting for one man to speak for everyone.
It will be secured when every Ijaw man and woman understands that citizenship comes with responsibility, that democracy requires participation, and that true leadership begins when ordinary people refuse to surrender their voices.
The greatest strength of the Ijaw nation has never been one individual.
Its greatest strength has always been its people.
