“‘If Government Can’t Protect You, Protect Yourself’ — Ibiyeomie’s Sermon Ignites Heated Nationwide Debate”

By Passman Akpos

Founder of Salvation Ministries, David Ibiyeomie, has generated widespread public debate following strong remarks on Nigeria’s security situation and alleged attacks against Christians in parts of the northern region.

The cleric made the comments during a recent sermon, where he expressed concern over rising insecurity in the country. He contrasted global technological advancement with what he described as Nigeria’s persistent struggle with violence and insecurity.

According to him, while other nations focus on innovation and space exploration, Nigeria continues to battle issues of kidnapping and killings.

“See, they are going to space… Nigeria is busy kidnapping. We are busy k!lling Christians in the north… When the world is thinking of how to go to space, Nigeria is busy killing people,” he said during the sermon.

The pastor called for urgent national attention to insecurity and urged citizens not to remain silent in the face of ongoing violence.

“And it must stop in this nation! Stop! We must stop… Wake up from your slumber,” he said, adding that Christians in affected areas should be more alert and vocal about their safety.

He further referenced Israel as an example of a nation that prioritizes self-defense, arguing that communities should take responsibility for their protection if government security measures fall short.

“Israel is a small nation… They defended themselves. If the government cannot defend you, defend yourself, Christians in the north,” he stated.

He also made a practical but controversial appeal for preparedness, advising congregants to be equipped for personal safety.

“Get a walking stick… I said walking stick!”The remarks have since triggered intense reactions across social media, with some Nigerians supporting his call for urgency on security reforms, while others argue that religious leaders should be cautious about statements that could heighten tensions in an already fragile security environment.

Authorities have not yet issued an official response to the comments.
