A heartbreaking account of insecurity in Nigeria has emerged from Kwara State, where a church pastor reportedly paid millions of naira and supplied food, fuel, and other items to kidnappers, only to later learn that his wife and several church members had died in captivity.
Pastor Sunday Timothy Omole, the minister-in-charge of ECWA Church, Omugo, Oro Ago in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, was reportedly preaching during a church service on March 22, 2026, when armed kidnappers stormed the church and abducted 11 people, including his wife, who was said to be ill at the time.
According to accounts from the community, the abductors later released two elderly victims and a child, citing their inability to endure the harsh conditions in the forest. The kidnappers subsequently contacted the pastor and allegedly demanded a staggering ransom of N1 billion for the release of the remaining captives.
After negotiations, the demand was reportedly reduced. Pastor Omole was said to have delivered N20 million in cash alongside five bags of rice, four 30-litre kegs of petrol, one keg of red oil, a packet of seasoning cubes, and other supplies requested by the abductors.
Sources said the pastor was encouraged after hearing his wife’s voice during the exchange, believing the ordeal would soon end. However, the captives were not released.
Instead, the kidnappers allegedly returned with another demand of N300 million, an amount the pastor and the affected families could not raise.
Tragedy struck days later when one of the abducted worshippers reportedly escaped from the kidnappers’ camp and returned to the community with devastating news. According to the survivor, five of the abducted victims, including Pastor Omole’s wife, had died while in captivity.
The incident has sparked fresh outrage over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the growing wave of kidnappings, ransom demands, and the apparent inability of authorities to protect vulnerable communities.
Citizens reacting to the development questioned why innocent worshippers could be abducted from a place of worship and held for months without a successful rescue operation, despite repeated assurances by government officials that security challenges are being addressed.
The tragedy has reignited calls for stronger action against kidnapping syndicates and armed criminal groups operating across parts of the country, as families continue to mourn loved ones lost to insecurity.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the reported deaths or the status of the remaining captives.
