In a dramatic political realignment, the entire Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives has formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers, who were previously members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announced their defection during Thursday’s plenary session, citing the need to align with the progressive agenda of the APC-led Federal Government and ensure better representation for their constituents.
In a joint statement signed by all members of the caucus, they said their decision was driven by the “prevailing political realities” and the desire to attract more federal presence and developmental projects to Enugu State.
“We believe this move will place us in a stronger position to work with the Federal Government to bring more dividends of democracy to our people,” the statement read.
The defection marks a significant political shift in Enugu, a state long considered a stronghold of the PDP since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Reacting to the development, the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, welcomed the lawmakers, describing their defection as “a bold and patriotic decision that reflects the growing confidence of Nigerians in the APC’s leadership.”
Political observers say the move could reshape the political landscape of Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections, potentially weakening the PDP’s dominance in the Southeast.
