Outrage In Delta As Alleged ₦50,000 Cash Demand Notice Hits Ethiope East Council

Residents and business operators in Ethiope East Local Government Area are currently in a state of heightened tension following the circulation of a controversial “demand notice” allegedly issued by the local council, which many have described as a potential tool for extortion.
The document, dated April 15, 2026, and bearing the insignia of Ethiope East Local Government Council, reportedly directs companies and organizations operating within the area to pay a special rate of fifty thousand Naira (N50,000) within one week. It further insists that payment must be made strictly in cash to a designated officer, with warnings of sanctions under existing local government laws for failure to comply.
The content of the letter, particularly the insistence on cash payments and the absence of a clearly defined breakdown or purpose for the levy, has triggered widespread outrage, suspicion, and public debate across the area.Many residents say the directive raises serious questions about transparency and accountability in local governance.
“This looks like a coordinated attempt at extortion using the name of the council. It must be stopped immediately before it damages the image of the people here,” a concerned stakeholder said.
Several business owners and community members also questioned the legality of the demand, noting that legitimate government payments are typically processed through traceable official bank accounts rather than cash transactions handed to individuals.
“Payment should be made in cash for what exactly? If there is no verifiable government account, then this matter is heading straight to court,” another resident warned.
Others pointed to inconsistencies in the structure and wording of the document, arguing that it lacks administrative professionalism and clarity. “Even the heading alone is confusing — ‘Demand Notice on Special Rate for the 2026’… what exactly is 2026 referring to? It doesn’t look official,” a critic observed.
As reactions continue to grow, some voices within the community have urged restraint, suggesting that the council leadership may not be aware of the letter’s circulation.
Defenders of the council chairman argue that the backlash may be premature. “It’s obvious the chairman might not be aware. Criticism is fine, but it should be measured,” one supporter said.
In response to the controversy, the council chairman reportedly denied any knowledge of the document and directed that anyone found attempting to enforce such a demand should be arrested immediately.
“The chairman says he is not aware. Anyone presenting that letter should be handed over to security agencies,” a source close to the leadership disclosed.
Despite this denial, pressure continues to mount on authorities to trace the origin of the document, investigate those responsible, and restore public confidence in the system.
Community members have warned that failure to act decisively could deepen distrust in local governance and further escalate tensions.
