The Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo has announced the commencement of an investigation into allegations of misconduct involving some of its personnel following complaints raised by the Southwest Zone of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Army Public Relations Officer, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, the Commandant of the Depot said the military authorities viewed the allegations with serious concern and reaffirmed that the Nigerian Army’s primary responsibility is to protect all citizens, particularly young people.

According to the statement, the Army stressed that any form of harassment, intimidation or assault against law-abiding citizens is unacceptable and does not align with the values and mandate of the service.

The Commandant disclosed that an investigation has been ordered to establish the facts surrounding the alleged incident and identify anyone found culpable. The Army also called on the Southwest Coordinator of NANS, Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, to submit all available evidence and witness statements to support a comprehensive investigation

The Depot further assured the public that its personnel are expected to uphold the highest standards of discipline, noting that the alleged misconduct does not reflect the training and character expected of soldiers at the institution.

The statement added that any personnel found guilty after the investigation would face the full weight of military law. It also revealed that the Commandant is prepared to meet with the NANS leadership at the earliest opportunity to discuss the matter and agree on the way forward.

The Army appealed for calm while the investigation is ongoing, assuring the public of its commitment to justice, accountability and the protection of the rights of all Nigerians.
