Support Tarakirivoice To Expose What Thrives In Secrecy Across The Niger Delta

By Tarakirivoice
An Appeal For Funding To Strengthen Investigative Journalism, Protect Communities And Hold Power Accountable
The Niger Delta is one of the most resource-rich regions in Africa, yet it remains confronted by poverty, environmental degradation, insecurity, human-rights abuses, exploitation, trafficking, unemployment and deepening inequality.
Behind many of these problems are stories that never reach the public.
Evil thrives in secrecy. Abuse flourishes where nobody is watching. Corruption survives where nobody asks difficult questions. And vulnerable people suffer when their voices are ignored.
This is why Tarakirivoice Newspaper Enterprise is seeking financial support to establish and strengthen a dedicated Niger Delta Investigative Journalism Initiative.
Our mission is simple but demanding: to investigate, document and expose issues that affect the lives, rights and future of people across the Niger Delta.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Across communities in Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and other parts of the Niger Delta, ordinary people continue to face serious challenges.
These include:
– Human-rights violations and abuses of power.
– Human trafficking and exploitation of vulnerable people.
– Child exploitation and forced labour.
– Environmental pollution and destruction of livelihoods.
– Oil spills and questionable remediation.
– Illegal exploitation of natural resources.- Corruption and abuse in public procurement.
– Mismanagement of community development funds.
– Exploitative labour practices.
– Abandoned government projects.
– Misuse of public resources.
– Suppression of community voices.
– Insecurity and the criminal networks that sustain it.
– Exploitation of women, youths and disadvantaged communities.
Many of these issues cannot be properly investigated through ordinary daily reporting.
They require time, resources, trained journalists, data, transportation, documentation, field verification, legal support and sustained follow-up.
THE PROBLEM
Investigative journalism is expensive.
A journalist investigating an allegation in a remote riverine community may have to travel by boat, spend days gathering evidence, interview multiple sources, obtain public records, analyse documents, verify claims, protect confidential sources and return repeatedly to the community.
Without adequate funding, many important investigations simply remain unfinished.
This creates a dangerous information gap where those with money, influence and power can operate without sufficient scrutiny.
Tarakirivoice wants to help close that gap.
WHAT WE WANT TO BUILD
We are seeking support to recruit, train and equip a team of professional investigative journalists and researchers dedicated to the Niger Delta.
The initiative will focus on:
Investigative Reporting:
Deep investigations into corruption, human-rights violations, environmental abuses, trafficking, exploitation and public accountability.
Data Journalism:
Tracking government budgets, contracts, oil-sector activities, environmental records and public expenditure.
Field Investigations:
Taking journalism beyond the newsroom into hard-to-reach communities where the most vulnerable people live.
Human-Rights Reporting:
Documenting abuses and amplifying the voices of victims whose experiences are often ignored.
Environmental Investigations:
Investigating pollution, oil spills, gas flaring, environmental degradation and the destruction of traditional livelihoods.
Accountability Journalism:
Following public money from the budget to the contractor, project site and ultimate beneficiaries.Training:
Building the capacity of young journalists in investigative techniques, data analysis, digital verification, document research, source protection, ethics and responsible reporting.
WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR CHARITY FOR A NEWSROOM.
We are asking for an investment in accountability.
Every naira invested in serious investigative journalism can help uncover information that protects public resources, exposes exploitation, gives victims a voice and forces institutions to answer difficult questions.
Our goal is not to attack individuals or organisations.
Our goal is to follow evidence wherever it leads.
Where allegations are made, we will seek documentary evidence.
Where corruption is suspected, we will follow the money.
Where communities make claims, we will verify them.
Where public officials or companies are accused, they will be given the opportunity to respond.
Where wrongdoing is established by credible evidence, we will publish the truth responsibly and fearlessly.

THE NIGER DELTA NEEDS MORE THAN HEADLINES.
It needs journalists willing to ask:
Where did the money go?
Who benefited?
Who is being exploited?
Who is responsible?
Why was this community abandoned?
Why are these people suffering?
Why has nobody been held accountable?
And most importantly
What can be done to stop it?
Tarakirivoice is prepared to ask those questions.
We need the resources to investigate the answers.
