“12 Years Not Enough? Pondi’s Fourth-Term Ambition Raises Questions on Power Rotation”

…As Burutu Rep Julius Pondi Seeks Re-Election, Promises Expanded Development

By Paul Ebi

Fresh political debate is brewing in Delta State following the declaration by the lawmaker representing Burutu Federal Constituency, Julius Pondi, to seek a fourth term in the 2027 general elections—an ambition that is now triggering growing concerns over power rotation and political inclusivity within the constituency.

Pondi made his intention known during a stakeholders’ meeting in Burutu Local Government Area, where party leaders, youth groups, women organizations, and grassroots political actors gathered to deliberate on the constituency’s political future.

While the announcement was met with applause from loyalists and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), it has also sparked wider conversations among political observers and constituents who question whether 12 consecutive years in office should give way to fresh representation.

Speaking at the event, Pondi defended his decision, arguing that continuity remains critical to sustaining ongoing projects and maintaining Burutu’s growing relevance at the national level.

“This journey has been about consistent service and measurable impact. What we have achieved so far needs to be sustained so that Burutu does not lose the gains of the past years,” he said.

First elected in 2015, Pondi has built a reputation as a ranking lawmaker with influence across key legislative committees. His tenure has seen projects ranging from classroom construction and healthcare facilities to solar-powered water systems, youth empowerment programmes, and scholarship initiatives.

However, critics say the conversation is no longer just about performance—but fairness and opportunity. The issue of political rotation, they argue, is becoming increasingly important in a constituency made up of diverse communities seeking equitable representation.

“Leadership is not only about what has been done, but also about who gets the chance to serve,” a local political stakeholder, who asked not to be named, told reporters. “Twelve years is significant. People are beginning to ask whether it’s time to open the space.”

Supporters, on the other hand, insist that halting Pondi’s tenure could disrupt the continuity of federal projects and weaken the constituency’s influence in Abuja. Many at the meeting described his leadership as stable and development-focused, urging voters to prioritize experience over experimentation.

Pondi himself sought to strike a unifying tone, cautioning against divisive politics while emphasizing collective progress.

“Our people face common challenges, and what we need is unity and consistent representation that delivers results,” he added.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Pondi’s fourth-term bid is expected to intensify political alignments and rivalries within Burutu, setting the stage for a broader debate—not just about development, but about democracy, fairness, and the future direction of representation in the constituency.

Whether voters will choose continuity or demand change remains a question that could redefine the political landscape of Burutu Federal Constituency.
