2027 Reality Check: Why Bola Ahmed Tinubu Remains the Man to Beat as African Democratic Congress Faces Structural Test

Political commentator Reno Omokri has argued that it would be unrealistic to expect the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, citing the outcome of the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council polls as an indicator of future political trends.
In a strongly worded political commentary as obtained by Tarakirivoice, released after the local government elections in Abuja, Omokri compared the ADC’s chances in 2027 to a football upset, saying expecting the party to unseat Tinubu is “like hoping Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. defeats Arsenal F.C..”
FCT Results Seen as Indicator for 2027
Omokri pointed to the performance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which secured five out of six chairmanship seats in the FCT elections, leaving one for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He argued that the outcome reflects the APC’s structural strength and incumbency advantage ahead of the next general election cycle.
According to him, political parties built around personalities rather than grassroots structures often struggle to convert popularity into electoral victories across multiple regions.
Criticism of Peter Obi’s Political Influence
The former presidential aide also criticized Peter Obi, claiming that the former Labour Party presidential candidate’s support base is largely ethnic and not easily transferable to other candidates or elections outside his core strongholds.
Omokri referenced past electoral outcomes to argue that endorsements linked to Obi have not consistently translated into victories, especially outside his home region.
Wike’s Infrastructure Projects Highlighted
Omokri further attributed the APC’s performance in the FCT to ongoing infrastructure development under the current administration and the role of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He claimed that projects across satellite towns influenced voter perception and strengthened support for the ruling party.
Economic Performance Argument
He also defended the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, asserting that improvements in fuel supply and macroeconomic indicators have strengthened the president’s political standing. Omokri referenced remarks attributed to the International Monetary Fund and analysis by The Economist, which he said suggested optimism about Nigeria’s economic direction.
Projection for 2027
Omokri concluded that the absence of strong state-level structures within the ADC and the growing number of governors aligned with the APC make it unlikely for the opposition party to mount a successful challenge in 2027.
He maintained that political structure, incumbency, and economic narratives would remain decisive factors as Nigeria approaches the next presidential election.
