Breaking: Mass Movement Of Jihadists Into Nigeria Raises Terror Fears As Kebbi Communities Report Attacks And Destruction

By Paul Ebi

Kebbi State, Nigeria — Tension is rising in parts of Kebbi State following viral claims alleging a deadly incursion by suspected jihadist fighters into communities in Shanga Local Government Area.

The disturbing alart, widely circulated on social media and attributed to Kemi Olunloyo, claim that armed militants linked to Islamic State West Africa Province have entered Nigeria through border routes from the Sahel region, specifically via neighboring Niger State.

According to the unverified reports, the attackers allegedly struck the Gebbe District in Shanga LGA, leaving multiple casualties and razing homes. The posts further claim that there is an absence of security forces in the affected areas and that local journalists have been discouraged from reporting the situation.

However, as of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from the Nigerian military, police authorities, or the Kebbi State Government regarding the alleged attack.

Security analysts warn that while cross-border threats from extremist groups operating in the Sahel remain a legitimate concern, unverified reports—especially those spreading rapidly online—can inflame public fear and complicate security operations.

Nigeria has long battled insurgency linked to groups like ISWAP and Boko Haram, particularly in the North-East. In recent years, concerns have grown over the potential expansion of such groups into North-Western states, including Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

Residents in border communities have repeatedly raised alarm over porous frontiers and the movement of armed groups across regions with limited surveillance.

Efforts to reach local authorities in Kebbi for confirmation or denial of the reported incident were unsuccessful at press time. Meanwhile, security agencies are yet to issue any public statement addressing the viral claims.

The situation underscores the urgent need for transparent communication from authorities, as well as responsible reporting, to prevent misinformation while ensuring that genuine security threats are not ignored.

As Nigerians await verified updates, citizens are advised to rely on credible sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that could heighten tensions across already vulnerable regions.
