Cheers in Barracks as Tinubu Approves Historic Salary Increase for 250,000 Armed Forces Personnel

President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay raises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent, in what the Federal Government describes as a major boost to troop welfare and national security.
According to a State House press release issued on Tuesday by the President’s Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, approximately 250,000 military personnel will benefit from the new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026.
The new salary package provides a 30 per cent increase for senior officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals.
Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will receive a 50 per cent salary increase, while soldiers from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The Federal Government disclosed that the salary review will raise the annual wage bill for the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, reflecting a substantial investment in the welfare of military personnel.
President Tinubu said the decision was in recognition of the courage, patriotism and sacrifices made daily by members of the Armed Forces in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President stated.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving troop welfare while strengthening the military through the acquisition of modern weapons, advanced technology and other operational resources needed to effectively tackle insecurity.
According to the President, security remains the foundation for national development, stressing that no country can attain greatness without guaranteeing the safety of its citizens.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he said.
President Tinubu urged members of the Armed Forces to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their dedication and service to the nation.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” the President added.
The salary adjustment is expected to improve morale among military personnel and reinforce ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
